I am currently working towards a bachelor’s degree in Nursing at UCLA. I have aspired to become a neonatal nurse since I was nine years old. As of now, I am interested in working with ill newborns who are sent to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). I am seeking any job opportunities where I can hone my skills and become more comfortable working with babies and children. Thus far, I have joined UCLA Health’s Care Extender Program where I have volunteered in the postpartum unit at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center and the medical intensive care unit (MICU) at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. I am also involved in the Critical Care Nursing Club at UCLA, where I have held a leadership position since joining. In my first year, I was the BSN 1 representative. Right now in my second year, I am the co-treasurer. Soon, I will be the secretary during my third year.As a future nurse, listening, attention to detail, and resilience and adaptability are critical to ensuring high-quality patient care. I do my best to truly and actively listen to whomever I am talking to—whether that is to learn from them or to provide them comfort and support. I try to make people feel heard because I know what it is like to be ignored and unheard; it is not a great feeling. I also try to nod or smile or do some kind of gesture to let the other person know that I hear them. As a nurse, I will ensure that my patients (and their advocates) are heard and understood. In addition to listening, attention to detail is an essential skill to have as a future nurse. As an observer, I notice small nuances—whether that be in an academic or a social setting. When I become a nurse, I will be meticulous in my work, paying close attention to my patients and their ever-changing health statuses. I will also make sure to follow hospital/institutional/ health policies and procedures accurately and precisely. Furthermore, my resilience and adaptability will help me as a nurse to cope with and adapt to stressful, ever-changing environments, and handle challenging situations with grace and composure. Because every patient case is different, I will need to adapt and cater my services to their unique needs and preferences.
