During the first week of camp, we worked with all of the students to develop team building, outdoor adventures, collaborative thinking, and exploration skills with all of the students. The second week of camp was the advanced camp for students in grades 10 - 12. We traveled to Lac du Flambeau and Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin to camp, hike, and/or canoe. We helped students explore leadership development training and cross-cultural sharing workshops. SMART is the Summer Mentoring, Adventures, and Reading Together program in which I staffed during the summer of 2011 at 25 hours per week, June through July. I improved reading comprehension skills of first through eighth grade students from low-income, bilingual backgrounds in the La Crosse and Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton School Districts by reading with them twice a week at their respective public libraries.
