Graduate Research AssistantCarleton University Sep 2011 - Apr 2017Ottawa, Canada AreaReinforced concrete (RC) shear walls are a widely used lateral load resisting system commonly present in structures located in seismically active zones. Shear walls have a higher amount of lateral stiffness in the in plane direction than other structural elements and are expected to perform better in resisting lateral loads. Although significant advancements in seismic design have been made in recent decades (ACI318-05, CSA A23.3 04), older shear wall buildings are still at risk of suffering considerable damage during moderate or large earthquakes. This is attributed to insufficient in plane stiffness, insufficient flexural and shear capacities, insufficient concrete confinement and poor detailing. The adverse effects of these deficiencies often translate to poor seismic performance due to poor energy dissipation capabilities, poor ductility behaviour, and the association of these effects with brittle failure mechanisms. The seismic response and behaviour of nine shear wall specimens with aspect ratios ranging from (0.65-1.2) designed to now considered obsolete design code provisions (ACI 1968, CSA 1977) are tested in the Carleton University Laboratories and their behaviour is predicted using non-linear finite element modeling. The wall specimens have poor confinement, insufficient shear reinforcement, and the presence of non-ductile details (lap splices) at potential plastic hinge locations. The usage of externally bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) is evaluated in strengthening and repair applications. Analytical results show that the numerical models can accurately predict the elastic and inelastic behaviour, peak load, maximum displacement, energy dissipation and the failure mechanisms of shear walls strengthened and repaired with FRP tow sheets. The fibre reinforced polymer material is effective in eliminating the brittle shear failure mode in walls with insufficient shear reinforcement. -
