I completed training to act as a “New York Learns Public Health” Learning Management System (LMS) administrator and provided back-up LMS help-desk support. In this role I maintained and updated LMS course and program listings as needed. I also supported the work of the Office of Public Health Practice Workforce Development Group by proof-reading, editing, and preparing communications.

I completed 35 hours of training on domestic violence, sexual violence, and offender dynamics through NYS Department of Health to become a Certified Rape Crisis Counselor. Throughout this internship I presented on healthy communication, consent, and sexual assault to middle school students. I also worked on numerous projects: Albany County’s collaborative initiative, “Our Healthy Babies”; an updated teen bookmark and human trafficking brochure; providing updates for the CVSVC website; and developing a standardized campus sexual assault protocol for area colleges and universities. Additionally, I responded to the emergency departments of Albany Medical Center, Albany Memorial Hospital and St. Peter’s Hospital to provide crisis intervention, and support to sexual assault victims throughout the Forensic Rape Exam. I also completed hotline phone call reports, client intake forms and NYS Office of Victim Services (OVS) application.

My responsibilities included handling administrative activities of the New York State ES VistA EMR Project, which include booking travel and submitting expense reports, and coordinating the on boarding and off boarding of employees coming on or leaving the project. I also prepared project documentation and status reports, created meeting agendas and minutes, and conducted research related activities to portfolio management.

I provided daily personal care and promoted the independence of intellectually and developmentally disabled adults in a residential environment. I accompanied clients when they went out in the community and served as their advocate. I also administered, documented and managed residents’ daily medication. Additionally, I completed progress notes as well as daily logs to provide feedback regarding the needs, progress, and condition of residents.

I continued research conducted during the McNair Summer Research Program within the Department of Public Health Sciences by analyzing pregnancy and birth intentions among two birth cohorts (2000-2001 and 2010-2011) using SPSS Statistics to identify adolescents with intended births and how these relationships may differ among the two birth cohorts. In collaboration with my research mentor, I prepared a poster which we presented at the American Public Health Association’s 141st Annual Meeting and Expo. In addition, I attended and participated in the Community Roundtable Discussions in the 19th Ward, an NIH (ROI) grant to assess at risk community members’ perceptions of healthy maternal child health practices.

As a summer research assistant in the Department of Public Health Sciences, I conducted a literature review on pregnancy intentions among adolescents as a foundation for a data analysis of adolescent births in Upstate New York. Through this research I developed proficiency in the use of SPSS Statistics for data analysis. I also assisted my research mentor with survey mailings and other maternal and child health research projects. At the end of the summer, I documented my findings in a detailed research paper and presentation to peers and faculty at the Ronald E. McNair Research Exposition.
