Library Assistant

Current

Longniddry

I am working in a small community to provide all library services. Using the spydus system, I am able to loan, return, make reservations and return books. I have the competency based skills of the system, as well as being able to change book details and barcodes. I understand the ordering systems and how spydus can be used in relation to this, but this is not something I have to do. I have attended training on creating bus passes. I have helped in the distribution of materials in accordance to the East Lothian systems. I understand how requests work through spydus. I have been responsible for using the tills and completing sales. We work closely with local art and craft groups. I am hoping to have more involvement in running schemes such as the book bug. I have training in May to provide me with the skills to do this. At the moment I am responsible for running other activities centred around young people such as scavenger hunts and making informative but engaging displays. An important part of the job is being an avid reader, and being up to date with new releases in order to provide recommendations for customers. It is important to be friendly and approachable as the job is customer orientated. I have supported individuals in using technology. I have been responsible for completing both the opening and closing of the library. I undertake day to day management tasks, cleaning, organising and doing checks. I understand council policies of confidentiality. I understand collating feedback in accordance with council standards.

Current

King Erik House, Shetland

I delivered social care to residents of a sheltered housing accommodation. Adhering the SSSC standards. I assist residents with their daily routines. This includes working and adapting to care plans that were suited around a persons physical, mental and social needs. This role taught me the value in understanding adaptive needs in jobs that work with clients or customers. I have encountered difficult situations surrounding a persons care or behaviour and I have been able to manage these well. I am also aware of when to report these behaviours. I have undergone confidentiality and equality in the workplace training during this role.

Domestic Helper

Shetland, Scotland, United Kingdom

On shift, I was responsible for cleaning specific areas of the home, which included service user rooms and bathrooms, corridors, and social areas. This involved tidying and cleaning all surfaces and floors, vacuuming, and cleaning toilet areas, which could sometimes contain bodily fluids. Maintaining good hygiene and adhering to a cleaning routine was essential to prevent cross-contamination between rooms. I had undertaken all the relevant training to prevent cross-contamination, could follow risk assessments, and cleaning schedules. While working in the home, I frequently came into contact with the service users and learned how they preferred their rooms to be cleaned, ensuring that my work suited their needs and did not disturb them.Additionally, I worked in the laundry, washing and drying service user clothing, staff scrubs, and other household items. I was gaining knowledge in general cleaning duties and recognizing risks and hazards, as well as understanding the ways in which different disabilities can affect individuals. There were instances where I had to support service users in need while waiting for the care staff to attend. I was aware that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, and I liked to believe that I upheld this principle in my daily life.I worked across three areas within the home and had learned to collaborate with different staff teams and service users.

Shetland, Scotland, United Kingdom

I have responsibility for ensuring a high standard of cleanliness within the kitchen. I operated the kitchen appliances and ensured all dishes, surfaces and floors were cleaned. I worked the tea time shifts where I would work alone, I used my own initiative to set my own routine and often did additional tasks if I had time. I learned basic problem solving skills when the kitchen appliances broke and sought help when needed. I comply with the health and safety procedures within the home.I had to undergo an induction for both the tea time and day shift which allows me to carry out both shifts confidently and independently.
