I completed my medical training at the University of Edinburgh (2014-2020). In 2015 I was awarded a Medical Research Scotland Vacation Scholarship, which I successfully completed at the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, and thereafter I continued to be active in academia: my ORCID link is "https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9188-1859". In 2016 I intercalated at King's College London for a year, where I obtained a (1st class) honours degree in Imaging Sciences (which was physics-based) and the prize for best intercalation project in the degree. In 2020 I was offered an Academic Foundation Post (AFP) at the Northern deanery following a nationally competitive interview process. I completed my 2 years of foundation training at South Tees NHS Trust (2020-2022) where I had the only post for academic foundation doctor in my cohort, and continued to balance clinical and research duties during the Covid-19 pandemic. On completing this, I felt I liked medicine as a subject matter and long-term career aspiration however I was still unsure which area of work I wanted to commit to. I took a 1 year career-break which I invested towards widening my horizons and self-development and care. During this time, I talked to specialists in different medical fields, did a further specialty taster week, worked on my research and began an MSc in Biomedical Engineering at UCL. The latter aligned with interests of mine like technology and affecting positive healthcare change at a mass scale, however I decided to drop out after 2 weeks on-campus, after re-evaluating the career landscape (in the UK), taking my background and career ideas into account. During this time I gradually developed a passion for public health medicine. I had not come across this specialty properly during my foundation years, and after networking with many specialists and looking into it in detail, I felt it was an area of work that highly interests me and which I aspired to specialise in. I was fortunate to be offered a national training number for an NHS post as a public health medicine specialist registrar following a highly competitive national application process, and moreover at my first-ranked region of Yorkshire and the Humber (deanery competition ratio 11:1). For ST1, I was assigned my first placement in Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (which has just won 2 national awards in 2023 as best local government authority in the UK), where I am currently working. As part of the specialty training I will also be doing an MPH at the University of Sheffield this academic year, fully sponsored by NHS England.

Furthermore, during my gastro rotation I was the junior doctor lead for organising the weekly departmental teaching. This involved working with a middle grade doctor to help ensure speakers from the clinical and allied medical team were available to speak when planned and circulating email reminders to both junior and senior staff regarding logistics. -
Vacation Scholarship At Edinburgh Cancer Research CentreMedical Research Scotland Jul 2015 - Sep 2015Awarded 2-month paid scholarship by Medical Research Scotland (Vacation Scholarship Award) - successfully completed project at the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre and the Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM), during summer break between years 1 and 2 of medical school. I went on to win Best Poster Prize in the “Gastrointestinal and Liver” Category at the 8th Annual ATRIUM Conference 2016, Edinburgh, where I presented my findings and the new hypothesis model. Project title: “Investigating the role of the Ubiquitin-Protein Ligase UBR5 in Hedgehog signalling and intestinal tumourigenesis”. Project link: https://www.medicalresearchscotland.org.uk/awards/investigating-role-ubiquitin-protein-ligase-ubr5-hedgehog-signalling-intestinal-tumourigenesis/ (This was mural-tumorigenesis histopathology project, classifying tumour types and biomarker intensities, both manually and with software semi-automation. I received histopathology classification tutoring from Prof. Mark Arends. I developed my knowledge of RNAscope, Immunohistochemistry and the biological pathway signalling we were focussed on (Hedgehog) and its ligands. I used softwares such as Definiens, NDP and OlyVIA for analysis/classification, scanned the slides, and was lucky enough to get some experience in the lab learning processing techniques. I developed skills in presenting my own data at regular intervals to my supervisor (Dr Mark Ditzel), the team, and even a collaborator at a different cancer research centre in Glasgow; as well as skills in statistical analysis using software, interpreting data, asking for clarification, and planning work in a logical way to answer new hypotheses.)
