Ismail Oubad Email and Phone Number
Ismail Oubad is a doctoral researcher within the ERC AdG SOLROUTES project, which explores solidarities along migration routes across Europe and beyond. I am pursuing a co-tutored Ph.D. between the Center for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM) at the University of Liège and the School of Social Sciences at the University of Genoa. My research focuses on the dynamics of solidarity and sanctuary formation, with particular attention to (subversive) migration infrastructures that shape the dwelling and movement of illegalized People on the Move. I rely on mobile ethnography, activist engagement, and grassroots organizing along a vital circuit connecting Brussels, western Belgium, and northern France—a key itinerary for Illegalized Migrants heading to the United Kingdom. Through this work, I aim to deepen the understanding of the politics and practices of migrant support, border transgression, the formation of struggles, and abolitionist intentions.

Doctoral ResearcherUniversità Degli Studi Di Genova Mar 2023 - PresentGenoa, Liguria, ItalyDoctoral Researcher in the ERC AdG SOLROUTES Project (Solidarities and Migrants' Routes Across Europe at Large). SOLROUTES approach is based on an ethnographic exploration of the nexus between unauthorized movements and the networks of solidarity with migrants in transit, which involve actors and practices that have been addressed just recently in migration studies. This multi-sited ethnography will explore and observe 50 crucial nodes in migration routes within Europe, in selected countries on its fringes (Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco) and in the Outermost Regions of the EU (French Guiana, Mayotte).SOLROUTES aims to: a) explore the functioning, articulations, and representations of local and trans-local networks which share shelter, knowledge and resources with migrants in transit; b) assess how routes are continuously reshaped by the encounter between unauthorized movements and solidarity networks; c) develop a large-scale multi-sited ethnographic approach based on live and collaborative methods and digital research; d) develop an innovative theory in migrations studies on the nexus between solidarity with migrants in transit and unauthorized movements, contributing to structure the emerging perspective of solidarities studies; e) generate Special Features – a web series, an art exhibit, a graphic novel – linked to the research, offering new narratives for local communities, and other relevant audiences in the spirit of public sociology. -
