About Isobel (Bel) Aysha Russell, M.D., Ph.D.

As an award-winning professor, board-certified anesthesiologist, and nationally recognized expert in transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and congenital heart disease, I have more than 20 years of accomplishments in my field. Following my retirement from the faculty at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), I was recruited to permanently join the cardiac anesthesia groups at Stanford University Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente and was named Edward A. Dickson Professor Emeritus at UCSF.During my tenure at UCSF, I influenced physicians’ careers and developed leaders across multiple specialties through long-term mentoring and advocacy. A solutions-driven leader, I am known for my honesty, tenacity, and calm demeanor. My multicultural background has helped me develop a global perspective, and I have built a deep international network through my leadership roles in the medical community.A few of my career highlights include:►Acquired board experience as a member of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists Board of Directors and task forces.►Held national/global leadership roles and served on the editorial boards for 7 journals and as a member of >50 university, hospital, and professional association committees, including the FDA Anesthesia and Life-Support Drug Advisory Committee.►Developed knowledge of board structure and governance as a graduate of the Financial Times Non-Executive Board Program in London (a comprehensive 6-month training) and completed a negotiations course at Stanford University.►Collaborated to publish 49 articles in my specialty, coedited a major anesthesia textbook, was invited to present more than 100 lectures at regional, national, and global meetings, and elected a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.►Attained buy-in and funding as a founding member of the UCSF Center for Applied 3D Technologies, developed a 3D and AI research protocol, and worked with Hewlett-Packard to design the handle for a pediatric TEE probe.My StoryBorn in Singapore, I was raised in Kuala Lumpur and educated in the U.K. and U.S. I inherited my father’s sense of fun and my mother’s driven nature and strong work ethic. In addition, I published 49 articles in peer-reviewed journals and co-edited a comprehensive textbook on anesthesia for congenital heart disease. Holding a joint appointment in the surgery department for 5 years, I also served on ~50 university committees and reviewed 3-4 journal abstracts per month.Key Contributions:►Secured $1.5M funding and achieved buy-in for the UCSF Center for Applied 3D Technologies (3D printing and AI).►Played a key role in advancing the anesthesiology program to national distinction and grew the lung transplant program to the third largest in the U.S. ►Achieved acceptance for interoperative TEE as a real-time monitor in cardiac surgery.►Collaborated with Hewlett-Packard to develop the pediatric TEE probe.►Significantly improved cardiac anesthesia training.►Grew the cardiac anesthesia faculty to meet new workload demands.►Received the Edward A. Dickson Professor Emeritus, Distinguished Women Faculty, and Exceptional Physician Awards and additional honors for clinical teaching and excellence.
