About Issmat A.

Issmat Al-Akhali is an immigrant entrepreneur based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Arriving from his home country of Yemen in 1999, he is currently the owner/operator of Halifax-based Blacksheep Project Management Inc., Granville Hall Student Residence, and the Cameo Hotel and Suites. Prior to launching his various businesses, Issmat held a series of positions in Nova Scotia, focusing on global education, economic and social development projects. He is a former Acting CEO and lead for international project development of Nova Scotia’s education and training sector association, EduNova.Issmat's experience spans various sectors in 20+ countries on four continents, which informs his regular writings and analysis of local, national and international affairs. He has contributed to several boards and public initiatives in Nova Scotia, including the Black Business Initiative (BBI), the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, and the Downtown Halifax Business Commission. He has advised new entrepreneurs in Canada and trained human rights activists in the Middle East. Issmat has two young children attending Nova Scotia's public schools. Having worked on the establishment and improvement of K-12 schools internationally, he is a strong advocate for the pursuit of high performance in public sector education.
