My role was to assist the scientific field research team with fieldwork tasks, and to conduct my own data collection on humpback whale songs for use in my undergraduate dissertation project.Responsibilities:* Designed and implemented data collection methodology for a personal research project on humpback whale songs.* Assisted with vessel-based fieldwork tasks for other projects (photo ID, acoustics, sightings, blow samples, biopsy samples, necropsy).* Processed and stored acoustic survey data whilst in the field.* Delivered outreach talks on personal research project. Background:I created this internship opportunity for myself as I wanted first-hand experience in bioacoustics research; an experience that was not offered by my university course. I made this possible by independently contacting and bringing together collaborators from a range of sectors, including members from CetaMada (Dr Anjara Saloma) and academics across various disciplines (physics, engineering) from the University of Southampton (Professor Paul White) and the Sorbonne University (Professor Olivier Adam), who facilitated my trip to Madagascar.A trip like this was not done previously by any undergraduate student on my course. Therefore, whilst in the UK, I was solely responsible for all aspects of the organisation of the trip, including paperwork (risk assessments in French and English, ethics approvals, budget plans) and other arrangements (travel, medical preparations, equipment organisation etc.).When in Madagascar, I was part of a multicultural research team, where English was not the spoken language. I spent the entire three months camping on the field site, which was a beach with limited facilities (electricity provided by solar power, drinking water collected from a stream, no phones, outdoor showers mounted on palm trees etc.).
