School leadership must be driven by a cause, by a purpose, by a belief. As Simon Sinek said, “people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” And by “why” he means: What is your purpose? What is your cause? What is your belief? It is my belief that effective school leaders are those who redesign school improvement through collaboration and a focus on community, who cultivate trust and collective-efficacy and know that professional capital is a combination of human capital, decisional capital and social capital.Richard has been teaching for 13 years and has been a Senior Leader for 10 years. He is currently Headteacher at Killisick Junior School (part of the Flying High Partnership) following a period of being Co-Head and Deputy Head Teacher, during which time he oversaw a school moving from three-times Requires Improvement towards Good at its next Graded Inspection. From 2017 to 2019, Richard was an Assistant Headteacher in an inner-city school that was deemed to have Serious Weaknesses in 2014. By 2017, it was judged to be Good in all areas. It was here that Richard undertook several leadership roles alongside developing his expertise as a classroom teacher.
