In 1999 while serving on the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners I started a small learning community, International Trade Academy, at Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington with a small group of trade and transportation industry colleagues and community leaders to introduce these at-risk students to careers in trade, transportation and logistics. In 2000 ITEP became a non-profit under the umbrella organiztion, Community Partners, in 2006 ITEP became a private non-profit. My role has been to raise funds to sustain the organization to deliver enrichment programs, to integrate industry subject matter in to the public school currriculum and develop industry advisory boardsfor each high school academy. Currently ITEP has 8 high school academies in low income communities developing work ready/college prepared high school graduates. There are 2000 students in the current academies, more students will be added over the next two years.My goal is to sustain the organization through the recession and continue developing academies in public high schools, motivating young men and women to graduate and seek careers in the maritime industries and ancillary industries of global safety and security, environment and trade, transportation and logistics.Specialties: Reaching out to industry and community men and women developing their interest and commitment to working with the high schools; raising funds; collaboration with other programs, government agencies, community and state colleges.
