I lead a collaborative team that combines Incident Response, Cyber Threat Intelligence, and Detection Engineering with a vision to provide "Verifiably Timely, Consistent, and Thorough Detection and Response to Cyber Threats." We work together to ensure we are aware of the latest threat actors and attacker techniques, we have the data to identify those threats, detect attacks, and that we can respond quickly to contain their impact. We build operational efficiencies through automation, keep an analytical mindset, and support each other as humans day-to-day to keep improving.

I help our security operations team to continuously improve our ability to detect and respond to cyberthreats. My primary focus is on detection engineering and cyber threat intelligence. Cybersecurity is a team activity and I collaborate throughout the organization to respond to emerging threats, provide actionable intelligence assessments, and hunt for threats in every dark corner.

I developed an agile use-case development methodology to improve the security operation team's detect-and-respond capabilities.

I love learning and I learn best by teaching and sharing. As a cybersecurity professional and a professional librarian, I given nearly 100 talks, taught over 20 courses, and love sharing what I have learned. As a member of VCURA's management team, I lead a team of cybersecurity consultants and brought to market new managed and consulting services. I acted as a Virtual CISO to clients and consulted in the areas of cybersecurity risk assessment, architecture, operations, incident response, threat hunting, and training.I developed a virtual training and adversary simulation lab to demonstrate cyberattacks and test defensive architecture, and delivered 17 unique cybersecurity courses comprising over 500 course hours delivered to over 75 technical professionals in the finance and energy sectors.

As Practice Lead my job was to set network and security standards, act as the primary subject matter expert for leaders in the organization, and coach staff in my practice area (design and operations). I recruited an amazing team of network and cybersecurity experts and helped implement the AER's first ITIL-based Change Approval Board and frequently lead CAB meetings.

I was the senior technical person responsible for design, implementation, and operations of server, virtualization, network, security, database, wireless, and storage systems. I addressed a large backlog of technical deficiencies and improved the resiliency of core IT infrastructure, improving uptime and reducing the cost to detect and resolve "break fix" issues. I architected and implemented an amazing "full stack" monitoring systems that covered all aspects of infrastructure.

This position gave me the opportunity to develop a security program for an 800 person organization that served a user base of tens-of-thousands of University staff, faculty, and students. I was responsible for security design, operations, awareness, and incident response. I performed operations for firewalls, anti-virus, email, and web server security. I designed and configured desktop security including for public-use computers. I assisted with data centre design and operations. I performed incident response and developed a successful security awareness program. I contributed to the departments Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plans.I also worked as part of a team with general responsibilities for network, server, virtualization, and storage for all University of Alberta Libraries (2nd largest IT group at the University). I was widely known for mentoring my peers and contributing widely to projects outside my team. I supported a variety of projects in collaboration with other Universities and was a frequent guest speaker in the School of Business and Library School.

I ran an Internet consulting company and completed many web development, database development, and infrastructure operations projects. My clients included a national telecommunication company, post-secondary institutions, a cancer research agency, virtual schools, and many libraries. I did website development for well known hockey teams, a municipal Olympic bid, theatre festivals, many small and medium businesses, a province-wide library authentication system, and much more. I consulted on a 30-million digital library center of excellence. I developed many IT monitoring and performance management systems.

Key technology advisor for a province-wide virtual school. My role was to design and oversee projects related to the school's student information database and Internet systems.

As a partner in the company, I started and managed a department that provided Internet services and consulting to Virtual Schools in Alberta, Canada. I designed the systems that were used by some of the most successful pioneers in Alberta in online distance education.
