About Jon Howell
Currently a Design Director leading the Brand XP (Brand Experience) team at Dropbox.I’ve dedicated my career to the intersection of Brand & Product Design – Brand Experience Design. I’ve spent many years now analyzing, identifying, and designing emotive experiences that shape the way people think and talk about brands they know and love. By indexing on how people feel, identifying their emotional state, and leaning into their emotions it has helped me to build trust, drive preference, and create affinity for the world’s largest brands.Prior to Dropbox, I’ve worked as an IC and also as a manager leading both Brand and Product Design teams. Below are some highlights of where I worked and what I worked on.At Robinhood, I helped spearhead the introduction of in-app education and financial literacy. Launching a multitude of educational experiences for users catered to a variety of learning styles. I also helped design and launch Crypto Wallets. At Lyft, I worked on the Brand XP team where we focused on finding unconventional ways to brand the in-ride experience and connect with both riders and drivers on an emotional level. Constantly thinking about and designing experiences for your senses – what does it look like, feel like, and smell like to ride with Lyft. I also the sole designer on Lyft’s #1 out-of-home marketing tool, the Lyft Amp. I designed ways in which the Amp beaconed various colors in crowded environments. I conducted research to find ways to incentivize drivers, which led to a nationwide sweepstakes helping to increase brand awareness for Lyft through the Amp. I also lead and designed the visual identity system and product application for Lyft Pink, Lyft’s newest membership program. At Twitch, I led the Brand Design team working closely with Product Design, Product Marketing, and Creative Services on ways in which to inject our brand into our product. I helped define the way we talked about and showcased new products and features through 3D/2D illustration and animation. At Microsoft, I was one of the first design hires on Power BI. I helped build the visual identity of the product and I designed many of its core features and functionality prior to launch. I went on to manage and design all iconography across Desktop, Mobile, and Web. I also worked with some of Microsoft’s highest profile customers such as Rolls Royce and Singapore Airlines to build custom data visualizations for their fleets. Prior to leaving Microsoft, I led the redesign of the Power BI mobile app that enabled users a richer way to digest complex data at a glance.

In the process, I helped to bridge the gap between the Brand & Product Design teams and together we were able to create a unified brand and product experience.Partnered with Brand Creative and Product Marketing to bring our LyftUp initiative into our product experience. This was kicked off with our partnership with Lebron James and our Bikeshare Access program. Within the LyftUp we had Round Up & Donate which was a way for riders to round up their fares to donate to local charities. I redesigned the Round Up & Donate experience to surface it earlier on in their ride so that riders had the chance to connect emotionally with their community by surfacing hyper localized charities within a riders locale. This led to an increase in more users opting in and making a difference within their community.
