Jonathan Whittle Email and Phone Number
Software engineer by day, amateur scholar by night. I completed a B.A. in Philosophy at Clemson University in 2013, then an M.Div from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2019, and finally a Th.M in Septuagint/Hebrew Bible in 2020. My academic focus is in a variety of dead languages, but my main interests are Classical and Hellenistic Greek, Classical (Biblical) Hebrew, and Syriac. My Th.M thesis is titled "Double Renderings in Greek Proverbs 1-9".During the day I write software and have worked in a variety of contexts. My personal preference is Rust, but I've also extensively used Go, Elixir, and JavaScript. I also play with Clojure. Outside of work I blend my academic interests with software, working on tools in the dead language space. I was formerly the Software Engineering Fellow for The Hexapla Institute, an international organization of scholars studying Origen's Hexapla, building new tools and a web portal for the data they collect through research. In the past I've been a musician and a personal trainer, and I still enjoy playing live music and heavy weight training.

Principal EngineerThe Hexapla Institute Jan 2020 - May 2021https://hexapla.orgThe Hexapla Institute is a group of international researchers studying the fragments of Origen's Hexapla. The software needs are threefold: an easily discoverable, public facing information site; a contributor portal where each contributor will save the fruits of their research labor; and a subscription-based data portal where libraries and researchers can query the data for their own needs. Software:1) Vue.js client applications. The primary goal of the contributor and subscription portals is to be easy to use and immediately intuitive. The data models on the backend carry an inherent complexity in both their structure and their potential relationships. The UI is designed to reduce the complexity for the end user, and infer the complexity on the backend. 2) Elixir/Phoenix REST API with Ecto ORM. The contributor API is small, only facilitating the needs of ~30 contributors. The ORM modules are designed to create the complex relationships that are intentionally kept out of view of the contributors. The subscription api will need to scale fast, as thousands of university libraries will open this portal up to their researchers. 4) Machine Learning (Tensorflow). What is severely lacking in the field of Septuagint studies is an abundance of scholars who are able to read and transcribe manuscripts for study. Because of this, there are countless Greek manuscript laying around in libraries worldwide that haven't been read in 100 years, if ever. For this reason, The Hexapla Institute will be equipped with manuscript recognition and parsing modules for uploading and transcribing manuscripts, as well as parsing meta data out of the final readings.
