Profile bio

About Itzel Flores Castillo Wang

I am a queer, indigenous, first-generation, woman of color, born and raised in Puebla, Mexico until ten years old when my family came to Los Angeles. I am a skilled capacity builder, community organizer and convener, excelling in collective impact, community engagement, advocacy, relationship building, communication, and facilitation. My organizing journey began with the May Day March in 2006 and continued to grow as I completed my B.A. in Environmental Studies at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) where I learned more about the impacts that systems of oppression, colonialism and more have had on me and my communities. As I understood more about issues such as gentrification, displacement, environmental injustice and more, my resolve to work with and for communities being impacted by this grew more. While in my previous role at Promesa Boyle Heights, I was able to deepen my understanding of community organizing and leadership, collective impact, and the intersections between issues impacting the Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles communities that included education justice, immigration rights, English Learners, early learning, wellness, environmental justice and post-secondary equity and success. While at Promesa, I stepped into leading Immigration Rights and Leadership Development work, and later the Environmental Justice work. Thru it all, I had the opportunity alongside an amazing group of Environmental Justice and Wellness Promotora groups, Comite de Lideres (Leadership Committee), and the community to continue building Promesa’s advocacy efforts and the community’s collective knowledge and power. As I continue my professional journey, my goal is to continue being involved in community and advocacy spaces connected to environmental and social justice as it is both my personal and professional commitment to continue working with community and defending Mother Earth and all her relatives.
