Assisting SRK consulting with field work while acquiring data relevant to my MSc. project on an undisclosed copper mine for a few months. During these few months, experience specifically in the following areas have been acquired; Material characterisation has included in-situ measurements of hydraulic characteristics. In-situ observations include waste and soil volumetric water content (Time Domain Reflectometry); waste and soil water suction (WaterMark sensors); percolation through waste rock (automated lysimeters); runoff processes (Wischmeier runoff plots with automated tipping buckets); near-surface phreatic surface fluctuations (piezometers); stream gauging in local drainage channels (rated sections with automatic water level recording) as well as meteorological observations. Samples from runoff, vadose zone water, seepage water, return water dams, stream flow and rainfall to determine the sulfate concentrations in these sources as well as the stable isotopes of water (18O and 2H) have been gathered during the dry and wet season.
