As a member of the Suffolk Army Cadet Force (Suffolk ACF), i progressed to a Sargent instructor, teaching cadets from 12-18 yrs in the ways of the army, teaching Dill and turnout, Skill at arms, Navigation and much more.In my time with the ACF i was a Detachment Commander and help to build the largest detachment in the County. Other roles that i undertook for the ACF were being a member of the Adventure Training team and taking cadets to Wales, to undertaken activities such as mountain biking, climbing and walking, Gorge walking, Coasteering and Caving.I was a train the trainer in Navigation teaching other Adults how to teach Navigation. I as also trained as a hill and moorland Leader, being able to lead groups in none mountainous areas.I was also the company Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Officer overseeing 7 other detachments, i have also gained leadership and management skills as part of this role. the main focus was to help the cadets through their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, helping organise Expeditions and ensure there route safety. i was also the Btec Officer, helping our cadets gain a Btec level 3 in uniformed services.

In 2004 I joined Highway and Construction department as a Highways Inspector working within the maintenance team. My main role was to undertake safety inspections of the highway, cost out and raise relevant defects and monitor the quality of the work carried out. I regularly communicated with members of the public over highways issues, including writing reports on insurance claims. I worked with the NRSWA officers, and meet with utilities, police and members of the public in relation to highways matters. In addition to my normal day-to-day work as an inspector I undertake Road Note 39 (the design guide for surface dressing) and then undertake much of supervision of the surface dressing in Ipswich, including identifying, raising and ordering of prep works.

1988 – 2004 In the time I worked for Ipswich Borough Council’s work Department or Direct Labour Organisation (DLO). I started as a labourer undertaking minor repairs within the highway (Kerbing, Paving and Asphalt patching). I worked my way up and became a Ganger or Charge hand undertaking larger projects such as full Footway and carriageway reconstruction, deep drainage repair, junction remodelling and construction of new car parks. In my capacity as charge hand I was responsible for many aspects of the project, i.e. reading and interpreting of construction drawings, setting out of the site, site safety, overseeing of co-works, ordering of materials, operating plant, measuring of completed works and time sheets for payment. Undertaking a large variety works in the highway as an operative has given me firsthand experience of many different types of materials, and has therefore given me a good understanding of how they act, react and perform in many situations.
