Responsible for the development of medical devices for the treatment of diabetes within Johnson & Johnson’s Diabetes Care Franchise and management of the mechanical engineering aspects of the design throughout product lifecycle. This ranges from customer focused requirements definition through to industrial design, product realisation and verification & validation testing. Vendor management during development and qualification of the injection molding process form a significant part of the role along with supporting other functions including regulatory, quality, sales and marketing. Three development projects delivered on time and to budget and several investigations into alternative therapies/technologies undertaken. Other activities include mentoring other engineers within the company, both as part of JnJ’s internal development programme and for those seeking professional membership through the Institution Of Mechanical Engineers. Development of the company’s CAD strategy remains a key activity with regards to use of ProEngineer, FEA tools and Windchill data management system and the integration of these into our quality system.

Expanded responsibilities and skills with involvement in the 5S programme, Design For Excellence and the successful award of Investors In People Certification. Used Triz and other design methodology techniques on several projects including the design of the Gemini Range of non-retractable ship stabilisers for military and coastguard vessels. Awarded the Sir Henry Royce Award For Innovation for the TruLift project which used fibre optic strain gauges to optimise the basis for controlling ship stabilisers by providing an accurate load feedback loop. Also led the engineering activites on the refurbishment of two steam catapults for the Brazilian Navy aircraft carrier Sao Paolo.

Returned to the design department prior to Brown Brothers being bought over by Rolls-Royce. Worked as a design engineer on stabiliser projects, using 3D CAD to model the designs and FEA tools to analyse them along with more traditional hand calculations. Carried out data-logging activities on several military, cargo and cruise ships to optimise the performance of the equipment supplied. Also acted as technical support for aftermarket activities and during commissioning.

Secured a position with Brown Brothers of Edinburgh (then part of the Vickers Group) who designed and manufactured stabilisers and steering gear for shipping and also equipment for the offshore industry (swivels, compensators, tensioners). Placed on the Vickers graduate training scheme with several secondments to different departments across the company (aftermarket, purchasing, production planning, manufacturing, sales).

Worked as a climber on screen in STV production of "Taggart" due to the story being based in the mountains. Also helped to provide a safe working environment for the cast and crew.

Fort William, United Kingdom

Joined the engineering team at Nevis Range in Fort William to construct a chairlift for the ski industry. This position was largely hands-on with typical activities including building the superstructure of the lift, fitting hydraulic systems and testing the overall construction.
