During my scientific career I have studied skeletogenesis in several vertebrate models. As a grad student, I used zebrafish to study collagenic structures in fin skeleton investigating the phenotypical changes that occur in these structures during Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). During my first postdoc at Cornell University, my work with mouse development, gave me the opportunity to start focusing my career in mammal models, which give a closer approximation to the study of human diseases. As a last step in my professional development to become an independent investigator, I moved to UCLA to perform translational science. During all these years at UCLA I have worked on the identification of novel genes and mutations responsible for human skeletal dysplasia. As a general approach, we analyze human exome data to uncover new loci (genes) responsible for the hereditary disorder. After identifying the genetic cause for the disease, I investigate the mechanisms of the disease and generate mouse models to phenocopy the identified mutations. These models favor the identification of the implicated genetic pathways and the disease triggering factors. In the last years, I have developed a new project generating CRISPR cell and animals models to search for new treatments under a precision medicine perspective. Our work has direct repercussion into diagnosis, counseling of families and potential treatments for genetics disorders. I strongly believe research on human genetics and human mechanisms of disease will be the next scientific revolution.
