The Bonner Program in the Honors College at the University of Houston is developing existing programs in college transition for 11th graders (Strive for College) and SAT preparation for 10th graders (Lobo Prep). These programs offer college support for high performing but low-income students near the University. To date, these college student-run programs have resulted in substantially increased SAT scores. Through Strive for College, college students mentor high school juniors through the processes of applying for college, securing financial aid, and choosing best-fit schools. Lobo Prep aims to break the correlation between family income and SAT score, making merit-based aid available to more low-income, first-generation, and minority students. Member Duties : The new VISTA Outreach Coordinator will help assess the current programs, improve their methods and curricula, work with faculty experts to develop tutor-training guidelines, and provide leadership for the expansion of the programs to high schools in Houston’s Third Ward. These programs are currently staffed by approximately 30 Bonners—students who commit to contribute 5-10 service hours to the community each week for each of their four undergraduate years—and as many as 20 more will be added next year. The new Coordinator will work with the staff to prepare these students for more and better service as they grow.
