My research is focused on scale up and demonstration of an alternative biomass combustion technology with inherent carbon capture (Biomass Chemical Looping Combustion). My research combines experimental work (design, commissioning, performance testing, experimentation with different fuels, oxygen carrier bed materials and reactor designs) and modelling and analytical research (thermodynamic modelling, material characterization). My primary focus is to determine the implications of biomass alkali emissions in the context of Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) technology. Some of my research achievements so far include:- Development of a surface ionization detector (SID)-based system for measurement of gaseous alkali emissions- First characterization of gas phase alkali emissions in Chemical Looping Combustion technology- Commissioning and start-up of a new 10 KW Solid Fuels Chemical Looping pilot reactor

Kearl Oil Sands Project Site, Alberta, Canada

Supported the commissioning and start-up of Imperial Oil & ExxonMobil's flagship Kearl Oil Sands Project ($13 billion investment). Provided engineering support and operations guidance in resolving plant start-up issues. Developed equipment commissioning test plans and start-up procedures. Produced and implemented engineering solutions to accelerate the plant start-up schedule. Effectively managed contractors (20+) and operations staff (10+) in executing critical technical field work.• Successfully led a plant-wide N2/He hydrocarbon leak testing program, achieving the significant safety milestone of a hydrocarbon leak-free pant start-up• Realized $10+ million in cost savings as well as multi-week start-up schedule acceleration by identifying and resolving multiple key start-up issues dealing with product sampling, risk of solvent back flow, product quality, solvent system capacity limitations, and froth filtration issues.

Provided oversight of the main design contractor in execution of the process engineering scope. Guided design process and reviewed process engineering deliverables such as PFDs, P&IDs, cause & effect diagrams, control narratives for multiple areas of the Kearl Expansion plant. Actively participated in HAZID, HAZOP, risk assessments and model reviews.Initiated and conducted technical feasibility studies of alternative cost-saving designs: developed design scope, estimates, schedules, and execution strategies. Presented proposed changes to senior management to obtain approval.• Spearheaded the design development of an innovative shallow-buried, self-winterized process water pipeline, creating $20 M+ in cost savings and achieving a first-of-its-kind design in the oil sands and for ExxonMobil.• Directed the successful development of the Kearl Expansion Project Design Basis, obtaining project full funding.• Created and implemented an engineering quality management system, improving cross-disciplinary communication and achieving 25% acceleration of engineering deliverable verification.

Conducted marketing and production management studies. Used engineering principles to optimize production scheduling, product blending, loading, and delivery for asphalt plant at Imperial Oil’s Strathcona refinery.• Established a new sales and production scheduling tool adopted by all of Imperial Oil’s asphalt business units across Canada.• Managed the Western Canada (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) base stocks and asphalt sales territory, gaining 20 M+ liters in new sales opportunities in 2008 despite the volatile price environment.
