Led global R&D group of 30 engineers, scientists, microbiologists and chemists, with direct report to the President of Microban. The R&D group is divided into six core functions: Ceramics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Liquids and Textiles, Microbiology, Analytical Chemistry, and Quality Assurance and Control. • Overall accountability for an average of 230 active projects with a technical completion success rate exceeding 85%. • Transformed R&D organization into a top-performing unit by accomplishing the following:− Reorganized R&D into a matrix structure that better handles cross-disciplinary projects with efficiency and thoroughness.− Introduced Stage Gate project management for innovation initiatives, enabling multiple projects to be executed and resourced within allocated timelines. − Recruited knowledge leaders from specialized research areas (e.g., medical biofilms, mycology, ceramics engineering, textiles engineering) from corporate and academic sources. These hires have ensured that each R&D core function is directed by experts in their fields.− Drove productivity increases while holding down R&D costs by project and resource planning, renegotiation of supply, maintenance and waste contracts, and judicious use of outside test labs and consultants. Three-year non-personnel expenses held steady despite a 40% increase in project and lab workload.• Visited customers, suppliers and prospects around the world (EU, US, China, Taiwan, Japan and Southeast Asia) to establish collaborative relationships, give technical presentations and perform production trials. • Prospected new technologies from university and cooperate sources. Performed technical due-diligence on new chemistries and technologies (including costs, production, and regulatory and IP assessments) for licensing and acquisition.• Created internal innovation teams that successfully produced new generational “step-change” technologies to ensure future competitiveness of company. .
