Conducting research on biomedical application of optical fibres and in the field of biomimetics, providing administrative and research assistance to the postdocs and undergraduate students of the Optical Fibre Technology Group, recruiting PhD students, organising collaborative research visits of overseas scholars to the group, developing and conducting physics and optics lectures and tutorials at the School of Physics.

Established a new theoretical laboratory by winning competitive two-year ITMO University Grant (2015-2017) and Grant of the President of the Russian Federation for Young Scientists (2017-2018). Hired, trained, and supervised team of three postdocs, two PhD students, and six undergraduate students. The laboratory developed a first theory of optical activity of semiconductor nanocrystals with different origins of chirality, published 42 journal articles, and its staff received eight prestigious awards from the Government of St Petersburg and the President of the Russian Federation. Won Best Young Scientist Award (2017) and three Best Student Supervisor Awards (in 2016, 2017, and 2018) of ITMO University, and Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researches (2019). Supervised to completion three master students and three bachelor students.

Won competitive ARC-funded three-year Discovery Early Career Researcher Award to conduct research on nonlinear optics of silicon nanocrystals. Developed a first theory of nonlinear optical phenomena in silica waveguides doped with highly nonlinear silicon nanocrystals. Won Monash Researcher Accelerator Grant to conduct research on optics of quantum-dot supercrystals. Trained one occupational trainee, co-supervised to completion four PhD students, and published 47 journal articles.

Conducted ARC-funded research on nonlinear silicon photonics. Developed several analytical and semi-analytical tools for modeling and optimisation of different silicon-based photonic devices, including powerful Raman amplifiers, logic gates, and optical memories. Co-supervised to completion two PhD students and two master students, published a book Optical Properties of Semiconductor Quantum Dots and 39 journal articles.

Developed and taught an undergraduate course Scientific Revolutions in Fundamentals of Physics and Cosmology for the third-year students and published a single-author tutorial book of the same title. Also taught an undergraduate course Quantum Mechanics and conducted tutorials on quantum mechanics for the third-year students. Conducted innovative research in optics of quantum nanostructures and published 6 journal articles.

Taught physics to 20-25-people groups of 13- to 17-year-old students. The excellence of my teaching was recognized by the Dynasty Foundation, which awarded me with three Young Teacher Awards in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
