I was engaged to manage the software development for both the Singapore and Malaysia offices of Kelly Services. Two modules made up the software i.e. Recruitment and Payroll. Among the key tasks of this role was to schedule and plan the development activities while keeping development on track, on schedule and with limited resources. These objectives were met within three months after many delays prior to my engagement. A phased development process together with a structured change request methods were also successfully implemented.

Initially hired as the Project Lead and later transitioned into the Product Manager role, daily responsibilities in the beginning revolved around project scheduling and resource management to ensure a smooth delivery of the skills-based job portal. Subsequent to the first round investment from a group of investors, transitioned into the role of a Product Manager to scope out and document product specifications for the newly established Application Software Provider (ASP) model for the development team. Was the de facto second person-in-charge of the company after the Managing Director throughout the tenure in the company. » Kept product development on track which was otherwise derailed due to new requirements coupled with the challenge of working with a remote programming team in Melbourne, Australia. Visited the team in Melbourne to further smoothen the cultural differences and project expectations.» Documented the ASP project’s specifications based on the pioneering Rationale Rose format, optimised for Object Oriented Programming which was earmarked for development using the world renowned BEA Systems.» Made formal presentations about the system and held product engagements with beta customers eg. EMC2 & Ministry of Manpower in Singapore and NetCel360 in Malaysia (subsidiary of Hong Kong’s Pacific Century Cyberworks owned by Richard Li, the son of Li Ka-Shing).

At the infancy of the Internet era in Malaysia, I was part of the young team assembled to build the first Internet portal for the Port Klang shipping community which ran on the company's electronic data interchange platform for the Port Klang Community System. I was responsible for understanding the end user requirements and compiling it as specifications for the technical team. The portal's main purpose was to publish the status of the Customs K1 and K2 forms for the shipping community. The portal also published other types of contents such as the mainstream Bernama News and information of interest from the public domain.As part of the young team, I was also given the responsibility to experiment with new technology platforms such as managing the production of the company's first multimedia presentation for the Asean Ports Association's Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

This often involved organising the files into its respective categories to facilitate a smooth execution of the instructions ie. to recover debt from delinquent credit card customers.The short stint at Citibank has been exceptionally invaluable, opening my eyes to the professional world at an MNC and experiencing first hand how sophisticated technology can drive a business ahead. It was also here where I improved on organisational skills, office relations, customer service, knowledge of the credit card industry and a host of other intangible attributes as a budding young 19-year-old as part of an international bank.
