In the words of one of the most influential people in my life Coach John Wooden, "We can have no progress without change, whether it be in basketball or anything else."Change is something we all experience, and some of us handle change better than others. In my lifetime as a technology professional and now father, I have learned to welcome change with an open mind and adapt to it. I have had the privilege to witness first hand the digital and cultural transformation around me in my current organization and in the world. Technologies, shift and so should our focus.As a teenager I recall believing that I would be an NBA player, and though I was the fastest student in the school at the time (eh ehm, humble brag), I was not made for the NBA; and that is okay. I learned a lot about teamwork and discipline thanks to some of the best teammates and coaches and I am thankful for that. Fast forward to 2010, I took an internship for the Data Center team at CME Group and was able to use the discipline and teamwork skills I learned on the court to complete my internship and be offered a full time role as an Infrastructure Engineer.Circling back to the beginning of my About Me section I talked about change; and since I began as a young intern at CME Group the world and technology as we know it has drastically changed. It is simpler for us to communicate, collaborate, and overall deliver thanks to the advancement of technology. But with great power also comes great caveats. The advancement of tech has given ill-intentioned individuals and groups the tools and means to attack organizations and innocent bystanders every day. I believe as professionals we as a whole should be cybersecurity focused and educate ourselves to protect against malicious activity. I began to dive deep into Cybersecurity in the last year and a half, even though I have been performing cyber defense activities as part of my Desktop Engineer duties for the last several years, and have been learning more about how to protect myself and my organization using best practices and standards. Malicious entities do not sleep, so it is important to educate ourselves and take action to secure our networks day and night. No matter what field someone is in, technology is almost always used, and that is why I have made it my focus to study and continue my path as a Cybersecurity-oriented technologist.-Ivan C.
