Group Design Director

London, England, Gb

In June of 2016 Chaotic Moon was merged with Fjord, a part of Accenture Interactive. In my new role as Group Design Director, I continued to oversee the design practice in Austin, but now had access to a larger design organization and a global network of peers. I oversaw a rebranding and expansion of the Austin studio which again put my architecture background to use. We were able to learn from Fjord’s experience and capabilities to bring new design offerings to Austin including: service design, data design, and a deeper research practice. We were also able to tap into Fjord and Accenture resources for diversity and inclusion training, and I was able to bring some of that back to the Austin studio in the form of workshops. For our clients, we rethought the car rental experience with Hertz. We helped Subway redesign their mobile apps with a focus on personalization, loyalty, and on-the-go ordering. We prototyped a social way to shop at Target. We created an augmented reality experience for Whole Foods Market. If you’ve ever asked someone at the United States Post Office to help you look up a lost package, we may have designed that system. We even helped Walmart rethink the future of work and the role of HR for its 2 million plus global workforce. And that’s just the work I can talk about. While I love diving into the weeds and being hands on, my time at Chaotic Moon and Fjord taught me that I’m equally happy being a facilitator and creating the conditions for others to thrive. I love seeing people grow in their careers and helping clients to achieve their goals.Clients include: Hertz, Subway, Target, United States Postal Service, Walmart, Whole Foods Market

Evp Of Design

Chaotic Moon Studios

In July of 2015, Accenture acquired Chaotic Moon.As EVP of Design, I was accountable for our ability to deliver from a design perspective, maintained all client relationships from a design perspective, served as the ultimate point of escalation for design issues, and was responsible for all aspects of managing the design team.Post-acquisition, I partnered with the Accenture integration team to ensure a smooth transition and carefully worked to mitigate any concerns team members had about the acquisition. One of our first integration activities was mapping existing roles to new Accenture levels which offered an opportunity to adjust individual compensation. I used this occasion to correct any previous issues, especially in regard to potential gender inequality. I collaborated with Chaotic Moon sales and marketing to clarify how we communicated our offering within Accenture to reduce friction and confusion in the sales process. I worked with Accenture sales to identify opportunities that would be a good fit for our team’s interests and capabilities, and worked within the Accenture sales structure to educate and advocate for design thinking.Accenture provided a strong sales pipeline and we experienced immediate, rapid growth. We continued our expansion into the Dallas market opening a new studio where I oversaw hiring as well as interior design. My ability to recruit based on my personal brand allowed us to quickly grow the design team headcount to over 50 individuals across a variety of design disciplines: visual, interaction, content, motion, and production.Clients include: Conoco Phillips, Disney, Exxon Mobil, TAG Heuer

Apr 2015 - Jun 2016

Executive Creative Director

Chaotic Moon Studios

Over Christmas vacation my boss, who had built and led the entire design practice, told me that he was moving on and had recommended me to backfill his position. I accepted, and after a few days in my new role, our CEO (my new boss) informed me that we were actively seeking a partner for acquisition and I needed to get the design department ready for a sell. This was a time of tremendous professional growth for me, as I honed my leadership skills and carefully guided my team through an emotional and pivotal transition while also plotting a course onward. While the team had a successful track record and portfolio of award-winning work, the documentation and structure needed to scale was outdated or lacking entirely. I oversaw efforts to quickly define and document our design offerings, delivery methodologies, process for scoping cost and effort, team structures and titles, and performance review process. I revised the reporting structure of team members and clarified roles and responsibilities. I assessed our mix of talent across levels, in light of utilization and chargeability metrics, and worked with recruiting to fill any gaps so that we were well balanced for delivery. I also realized there was an unmet need for a diversity advocate at the executive level so I assumed that role and helped fund and start several employee resource groups.I also worked with my peers in sales, engineering, project management, operations, and our C-suite to create presentation materials that conveyed our value proposition to potential buyers. Collectively, we pitched this to multiple perspective buyers over several months before deciding on a partner.Clients include: CEO, Design team

Jan 2015 - Apr 2015

Creative Director

Chaotic Moon Studios

Chaotic Moon presented an opportunity to dive back into project-based work for groundbreaking clients. As a Creative Director, I led design work for John Deere as they redefined the future of farming, leveraging a new world of insights made possible by data harvested from a complex web of connected sensors. I helped Schlumberger visualize drilling data to make the business of oil field services safer, and pave the way for remote operations. I also led an on-call, rapidly scalable innovation team for Dell that tackled everything from prototyping software for unreleased mobile hardware to rethinking remote work in a world of connected devices.Clients include: Dell, John Deere, Schlumberger

May 2014 - Jan 2015

Creative Director

Austin, Texas, Us

I was recruited by Mutual Mobile to help mature the visual design discipline in what was historically an engineering-led startup. After baselining current capabilities and surveying the existing team, I developed a comprehensive plan to increase quality and elevate the voice of visual design within the organization. In parallel to increasing our internal ability to deliver, I worked with the sales and marketing teams to reposition our design capabilities externally. To attract design-savy clients and win more prestigious work, I identified team members with strong concepting skills and formed a dedicated pitch team. This team responded to RFPs with high quality conceptual work and compelling storytelling which put us in direct competition with traditional agencies. The approach elevated our perception in the market and resulted in deals with design-led clients like Nike.I was responsible for all aspects of managing the Austin, Texas and Hyderabad, India based visual design teams, and I partnered with other design leaders to co-manage the larger multi-disciplinary design team. I also led the effort to define and document our design process, with a focus on rapid prototyping and the integration of insights from user testing, in collaboration with engineering and project management leadership. In addition to my organization-level functions, I oversaw a portfolio of client work across a variety of technologies including responsive web, iPhone, iPad, Android phone, Android tablet, and Google Glass.Mutual Mobile gave me an opportunity to lead and mentor, and it opened my eyes to how an internationally distributed, multi-disciplinary team could leverage agile software development methodologies to consistently produce high-quality products. It also reinforced the importance of design being a data-driven and iterative system.Clients include: Autotrader/KBB, Humana, Nike, Union Bank

Apr 2012 - May 2014

Sr. Art Director

New York, Ny, Us

Joining Razorfish gave me the opportunity to apply my training in design to a digital canvas by working with multi-disciplinary teams to build large-scale digital products for Fortune 500 clients. The first few years were a period of rapid growth for the Austin office, and I had the opportunity to contribute on numerous fast-paced pitches to help win new business. As the office matured, I led visual design teams across a variety of web-based and mobile projects in close collaboration with interaction designers, developers, project managers, and our clients.I also helped extend our service offering through the creation of a production design discipline. Production design offered clients a lower-cost staffing model that often partnered with and trained a client’s internal design team. Since most projects at the time were developed in a waterfall methodology, keeping designers engaged through development and QA was key to ensuring our work met the highest quality standards. My time at Razorfish gave me visibility into how top-tier agencies execute omnichannel programs for some of the world’s largest companies.Clients include: AT&T, Blackberry, Dell, Invesco, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Southwest Airlines, State Farm
