L’OPI est une fondation de droit privé fondée en 1976. Elle est née d’une volonté du gouvernement genevois de soutenir son industrie. Avec le temps, l’OPI a évolué. Sur le plan géographique notamment, puisque depuis une dizaine d’années, la Fondation a acquis une dimension lémanique en étant co-financé par le canton de Vaud. Depuis 2003, l’OPI est également mandaté par la Conférence des Départements de l’Economie Publique de Suisse Occidentale (CDEP-SO) ce qui lui confère un caractère romand.
