About Maria Ivanova

Science is a thrilling journey full of adventures. I love solving mysteries and revealing hidden knowledge.During my PhD, I study the evolutionary conservation of heterochronic genes in Caenorhabditis species. I made more than 42 mutant alleles in C. briggsae using CRISPR/Cas9 to compare the functions of its heterochronic gene orthologs to those of C. elegans.I also apply auxin-inducible degron (AID) system to study the activity of heterochronic genes in time.

I study heterochronic genes evolution in nematodes. Heterochronic genes are well characterized in C. elegans. To find how the heterochronic pathway changes in evolution I made mutants of orthologous genes in C. briggsae using CRISPR/Cas9. I also applied auxin-inducible degron technology.
  • Vavilov Institute Of General Genetics

    Undergraduate Student
Moscow State University, Department Of Bioengineering And Bioinformatics Sep 2014 - Jun 2015
    Moscow, Moscow City, Russia
Worked on my diploma project (PI: Elena Nadezhdina, Ph.D.).I studied interactions of the ribosomal protein RPL22e with microtubules. I engineered genetic constructs for the expression of truncated proteins in bacteria, purified proteins, performed co-sedimentation of these proteins with microtubules and then analyzed their interaction using TIRF microscopy.

Institute For Gene Biology Russian Academy Of Sciences Sep 2011 - Jun 2012
    Moscow, Russia
Worked on my first term project (PI: Galina Pavlova, Ph.D.).I analyzed the evolution of cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP) from different species from fish to human by building a phylogenetic tree with available sequences from public databases. I compared different methods of sequence alignment and phylogeny reconstruction. I also practiced RNA isolation and reverse transcription at the lab.
