Group Schemes Remediation
Johannesburg Area, South Africa
Group Schemes is one of the three business lines in M&F's Retail Insurance business, and has consistently under-performed. Prior years of benign claims experience hid serious flaws in the business, and the onslaught of horrendous hail and floods formed a perfect storm with the general difficult economic conditions and strong direct competitors. We have reviewed the entire value chain, removed conflict, aligned incentives, exercised pricing discipline, and removed the leakage on every line of our overall income statement. Most importantly, we have focused on our Broker Interactions, our Oversight Model, Data, and portfolio strategies, and elevated the quality of our scheme management meetings to the extent that each schemes income statement can be deconstructed into key operational value tree drivers with deeper insight into how we create and destroy value. This journey has entailed working closely with Brokers (there have been exceptions) and has really been enlightening, and rewarding. I have been blown away at how loss ratios in excess of 90% have been reduced to less that 65% with policy counts growing. I wish I could mention these schemes by name here! Critically, we now understand our business properly, where previously I doubted even policy counts! I have many people to thank within M&F itself, in particular the pricing actuaries in Fourie's team, the RSM under Louw, David in Finance, Anesh in Claims, Sujeeth for his support and Hannes for his comraderie and fights with me on the 20th!The GS Account Managers have warmed my heart as they took ownership of the new business model and its increased demands. Two of them, who I will not name here, for fear of poaching, have won my deepest respect and admiration. Lastly, my boss Coenraad, who gave me and the team complete freedom to do as we required and always was available for a robust discussion. Thank you for granting me my wish.We have started to win key battles, but have not won the war..yet!
