About Ilse Van Bemmel
Keywords: interface, analytical, ambitious, planning, overviewMy goal is to work on the fringe between science, engineering and management. I have a broad technical and scientific background, am precise and critical. I am eager to learn, very ambitious, and can work both independently and in a team. When I encounter a problem I consult a range of people to find a long term solution that is supported by the majority. In my current job I coordinate software development for the next major leap in high-resolution imaging: millimeter-VLBI observations with BlackHoleCam and Event Horizong Telescope. The goal of this project is to produce the first ever image of the event horizon around a black hole. I am constantly expanding my astronomical knowledge and complementing my technical expertise. As a consequence, I have a world-wide network in many different fields. Management and organization play an integral role in all aspects of my career. I find public outreach highly rewarding and enjoyable.

Project Scientist
In my job I coordinate the workpackage for software development for the BlackHoleCam project. The software involves the mm-VLBI data-reduction pipeline, which is my main focus. In addition I am involved in coordinating the software development for the Mark VI recorder. A small part of my time is dedicated to astronomical research on the triggering and feedback mechanisms in active galaxies, or in short: how to feed a black hole.
Deputy Project Scientist
As deputy project scientist I work with the project scientists of the low-frequency (LFAA) and mid-frequency aperture array (MFAA) consortia to maximise the scientific return of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). My daily work involves: - frequent discussions with astronomers, engineers, software developers and managers- attending and organizing meetings to discuss the system design and science impact- requirement and performance analysis for the instrument- comparison to existing instrumentation- PhD level understanding of all involved science projects- understanding of the higher level engineering concepts- public outreach towards professionals and amateurs
Astronomer
As an astronomer I study the influence of material close to the central black hole of nearby galaxies. This requires different observations and data processing techniques, as well as programming skills to optimize existing scripts for my personal needs. I am actively involved in LOFAR calibration and commissioning, and leading my own research project on a nearby galaxy. The latter involves collaboration with international astronomers, to secure observations from many different instruments. My daily work involves:- data processing with radio-astronomical packages such as AIPS, CASA and the new LOFAR software (BBS, PyBDSM, awimager)- analysis of data quality- scripting in Python- giving presentations to international audiences- writing scientific papers on the results- public outreach
Chair Of The Diversity Committee
Within ASTRON and JIVE the Diversity Committee consists of volunteers who advise the management team on strategies to improve diversity in every aspect of the organization. In a technically oriented workplace the gender diversity plays a leading role, but the committee also considers ethnic minorities and disabled people. As chair of the committee I am responsible for reporting to the management, writing policy documents and lead the monthly meetings.
