Directed and managed programs and staff for a 1,600-member non-profit association with annual budget ranging from $1.3 to $2.1 million. Worked hands-on with 6 to 13 staffers to produce NAHJ’s annual conventions; advocate for media diversity and fair media public policy; organize training for professional and aspiring journalists; award $1 million+ in scholarships; recruit/monitor community advocates for improved news coverage; supervise research on lack of coverage and inclusion of Hispanics on national TV news; other programs.• Served as advocate and NAHJ spokesman on media-related issues on English- and Spanish-language broadcast outlets and publications. Topics included: negative impact of unfair immigration coverage; fight for fair and open Internet for people of color; link between poor coverage of race/ethnicity and discrimination.• Directed fundraising from corporations, foundations, individuals, and special events that brought in more than $13 million over eight years.• Directed and implemented communications. Among tasks: plan navigation and produce content for revamped website; grow social media to a network of 5,000-plus people; produce and/or edit reports and press releases in English and Spanish; draft marketing materials and implement social media for events and advocacy work.• Intensified advocacy among Latino journalists, colleagues of all ethnic groups, and national Latino groups for fair media public policy. Engaged officials at Capitol Hill and the FCC on preserving a free and open Internet, opposing increased media consolidation, other issues.• Strengthened internships and training for 600-plus mostly Latino journalism students at NAHJ conventions, and by creating unique paid internships at Spanish-language newspapers to cover local communities and Hispanic affairs.• Supervised expansion of NAHJ’s Parity Project, which created a network of Latinos across the U.S. to monitor news and work with local media to improve coverage.
