About Iwan Syahril

Managing close to 5000 employees and 40 offices in 34 provinces, Iwan Syahril has led system transformation for PreK-12 schools in Indonesia. His main role is to create and implement student-centered policies that aim at improving the learning quality of more than 50 million students taught by more than 3.3 million teachers in 420 thousand schools in 552 autonomous local governments, located in an archipelago consisting of more than 17 thousand islands.Prior to becoming the core leadership team in the ministry, he was education dean at Sampoerna University in Indonesia, and a scholar in the field of teacher learning and educational policy. He completed two doctoral programs in teacher education and educational policy at Michigan State University, and two master’s programs in secondary education and curriculum and teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. In 2021, Iwan was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities by Michigan State University.In the past five years, Iwan has played a leading role in the team which crafted a wholesale transformation of Indonesia’s education system. Iwan also directs the development of key technology platforms in PreK-12 schools that have changed the mindset, behavior, and culture of many key stakeholders in schools and local governments to be more student-centered and data-driven in their decision making. Iwan believes that a user-centric technology is the game changer to address complexities and to solve adaptive challenges in system transformation.A former Chair of G20 Education Working Group, Iwan is active in multilateral forums advocating education system transformation towards reaching SDG goals in 2030.
