About Iwona B. Sadowska, Ph.D.

Prof. Iwona Sadowska joined the Georgetown University faculty in 2005 and teaches Polish and Russian language, Slavic literatures, and film studies in the Department of Slavic Languages and with the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies (CERES) in the School of Foreign Service. Sadowska is the author of Polish: A Comprehensive Grammar, published by Routledge in 2012 as part of its leading grammar series. This book is the most extensive description of the Polish language system published internationally and is unique in addressing gender issues in the language. She is currently working on a second edition.For her outstanding commitment to the educational advancement of students at Georgetown University, Sadowska was awarded the 2015 Dorothy Brown Award for Excellence in Teaching. She has been honored three times at the annual Georgetown College Honors Ceremony (2012–14) for teaching. Sadowska was awarded a Georgetown University Doyle Fellowship for 2015–16 and serves as an elected member of the Faculty Senate for the 2014–17 term. At Georgetown, she has made media appearances, including on the Polish evening news (TVP1), Polsat News, and in print.Sadowska’s fields of interest include cultural analysis, film studies, critical theory, Slavic literatures, and applied linguistics. She did her graduate studies in Slavic languages and literature at the University of Gdańsk (Uniwersytet Gdański) in Gdańsk, Poland and was awarded a fellowship by the Polish Ministry of Education to study at the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute (Государственный институт русского языка имени А.С. Пушкина) in Moscow, Russia. Sadowska has previously worked on linguistics projects with the University of Maryland, College Park. She has lived, worked, and traveled in over 50 countries and traversed Eurasia overland from the Pacific to the Atlantic via Central Asia and the Caucasus.
