Responsible for Transfusion Services’ departmental compliance with biosafety policies. Ensure an adequate inventory of blood products, tissues, reagents and supplies, optimizing ordering patterns and utilization to maximize benefit of vendor contracts. Consults with physicians, nurses and personnel in other hospital departments or off-site locations as needed. Responsible for the operation, certification and maintenance of transfusion service equipment. Monitors a preventative maintenance schedule to ensure optimal performance. Insure section compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies. Prepare reports as needed to demonstrate performance monitors in the Transfusion Service for the Blood and Tissue Usage Committee. Assist in preparation of the section’s operating and capital budgets, and monitors adherence to budgetary guidelines. Identify opportunities for improvement in departmental activities or processes. Pursue improvement according to facility quality processes. Conduct periodical employee meetings to disseminate pertinent information regarding updates and changes to hospital, laboratory or section policies and procedures, and to gather employee comments and make appropriate response.

Teach medical laboratory technician students principles of immunology as related to immunohematology through lecture and laboratory. Prepare all quizzes, exams, and practice material. Prepare samples for laboratory exercises. Question students based on principles and question styles can be expected of them from the American Society for Clinical Pathology certification exam.

Perform various antibody identification techniques to resolve complex antibody work ups for hospitals in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania area. Recommend patients for molecular phenotyping based on antibody identification results. Perform platelet antibody screens and platelet crossmatches using solid phase technique. Perform extensive donor phenotyping for area sickle cell programs and special antigen needs. Fill special blood orders for Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania area hospitals.

Perform ABO/Rh testing, antibody screening, compatibility testing, antibody identification utilizing various reference techniques. Product modification according to patient diagnosis, issue products for transfusion, process donated blood into indicated products, process donated blood products for labeling to be released into inventory. Process donated apheresis platelets for bacterial contamination testing. Quality control and quality assurance duties, transfusion related research and all associated writing. Help train medical technology students, residents, and fellows on clinical rotation. Present for bi-monthly journal clubs. Pass all exams with 75% or better. Complete SBB assignments as required
