The Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia of the Organization of American States(hereinafter MAPP/OAS) derives from the agreement entered into by the Government of theRepublic of Colombia and the Organization of American States (hereinafter OAS) signed onJanuary 26, 2004, with the objective of supporting the peace policy of the Colombian State.After 18 years of uninterrupted presence in Colombia and a Mandate that has been modified andextended eight times, the Mission continues to promote peacebuilding in the territories most affectedby armed conflict, criminality and inequity, understanding peace as a moral, humanitarian, social,environmental, cultural, political and economic imperative.Our MandateThe current Mission’s mandate is to carry out a broad and flexible accompaniment of theColombian State's peace policy regarding illegal armed groups, incorporating a differentialapproach to gender, ethnicity and age in all work areas. In this context, MAPP/OAS contributes topeace in Colombia by:Monitoring the impact of violence, social dynamics, and peace policiesAccompanying and supporting peace initiativesVisibilizing the progress, challenges, and threats to peace in ColombiaStrength victims, communities, and leaders for comprehensive peacebuilding.This comprehensive work method allows the Mission to generate relevant and timely informationand recommendations, highlight achievements, point out challenges, and warn of the main threatsto peace.
