J. Byron Brazier, lead developer of Woodlawn Central on Chicago’s South Side, is an artist-turned-entrepreneur who has dedicated his life to bringing opportunity and equity to underserved communities. Drawing on his extensive background in the arts, program management, strategic planning, branding and marketing, he plans and executes transformative projects that create coveted local facilities and amenities. These new community assets spur economic development and improve public safety, health equity, education, employment, the quality of housing, tourism, entertainment offerings and more in their respective areas. Brazier brings a substantial track record to his role at Woodlawn Central, a catalytic mixed-use development designed to fulfill its under-capitalized community’s most pressing needs and wants. It was designed under Brazier’s watch with extensive community engagement from One Woodlawn and the Network of Woodlawn—the neighborhood’s most active and significant community organizations. As such it was conceived of and designed for the Black community through self-determination. Given Woodlawn’s size and history as a once-thriving area, Brazier was instrumental in maximizing the impending development’s purpose. It is designed to be a micro-version of the impressive Woodlawn 2060 Plan for Urban Regeneration and Social Sustainability.
