In July 2001 Dr. Rogers accepted the Karl F. Hasselmann Chair in Geological Engineering at the Missouri University of Science & Technology, where he teaches courses focusing on mitigation of natural hazards, including basic and advanced Engineering Geology and Geotechnics. He has also developed specific courses in Geotechnical Construction Practice, Military Geology, and Evolution of Flood Control Engineering for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and distance graduate students enrolled in Missouri S&T's Master's of Engineering in Geotechnics program. He has served on investigative panels for the National Academy of Engineering, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Environmental Defense Fund, National Audubon Society, the National Wildlife Federation, and the States of Washington, California, Louisiana, Hawaii, and Missouri. He has supervised research sponsored by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Geological Survey, National Science Foundation, Federal Highway Administration, and Exxon-Mobil, among others. Specialties: Recognized expertise in geoforensics of dam, levee, and slope stability failures; flood control and fluvial geomorphology, the Mississippi and California Bay Deltas, and site characterization for seismic site response. He has a passion for civil engineering history, with particular emphasis on geotechnical engineering and engineering geology. He maintains a website on the Evolution of Geotechnical Practice in California and its impacts on the national standard of care, at www.mst.edu/~rogersda/Geotechnical-Practice/ He has also written articles and prepared posted lectures on the evolution of flood control practice, dam and levee failures, landslide dams, Hoover Dam, the Panama Canal, Tennessee Valley Authority, Miami Conservancy District, etc.

Corresponding MemberHistory & Heritage Committee Of The American Society Of Civil Engineers Nov 2010 - PresentIn 2014 I completed a 240-page article on the Engineers Who Built the Panama Canal and delivered one of the heritage presentations at the World Engineering Congress in Panama to commemorate the canal’s 100th anniversary. Over the past few years I have also contributed articles and presentations in various aspects of civil engineering history, such as William Mulholland and the St. Francis Dam failure, Gatun Dam (1905-14) in Panama, the Alexander Dam failure in 1930, Austin (Texas) Dam failure in 1900, the 2005 Taum Sauk Dam failure, 9 articles on Hoover Dam and the Boulder Canyon Project (1928-35), the Miami Conservancy District (1913-23), Tennessee Valley Authority (1933-45), the Mississippi River & Tributaries Project (1928-present), flood protection of New Orleans (1718-2005), environmental security in the Middle East since 1945, and the Panama Canal (1849-present). I am presently working with Chuck Spinks to document the contributions of civil engineers in the First Transcontinental Railroad for the upcoming 150th anniversary of its completion to be celebrated in May 2019.
