After a couple years I was promoted and given the role of Tech Lead for a team of five developers on a three-year product development effort to build the fourth generation of the intraoperative Nerve Integrity Monitor (NIM) console used in ear, nose, and throat surgery. It is a distributed system consisting of a custom-built computer with several embedded processors and peripheral devices.My team focused on building a rich WPF UI (with >800 requirements) from the ground up that controls firmware, renders EMG signals in real-time (<165ms latency), and exports surgical case data to reports and databases. I defined our application's software architecture, team coding standards, coached team members in design patterns, and directly managed two developers (one remote) and interns. During this time I served as a key technical contributor, implementing most of our key infrastructure and middleware myself. Since I began this project from its inception, I've worked across the entire product development life cycle. I have worked closely with marketing, SMEs, and surgeon users to develop new features, collect user needs and project them into subsystem and software requirements. I have collected feedback directly from users in order to help build elegant, user friendly features, and have embraced an iterative approach to constantly improve.Known as a competent leader, I also successfully piloted a successful Agile development implementation within our IEC 62304 regulated process, and championed Agile to the engineering department which led to other teams adopting Agile methodology. In this role I enhanced the legacy nerve monitor’s detection of potential nerve damage by developing a real-time signal processing algorithm in C on a digital signal processor that reduced mean error in calculating signal onsets by a factor of 10. Other engineering projects included development of a component to display live video streams inside a legacy nerve monitor WPF application and save streams to file (C++/CLI, DirectX, Microsoft Media Foundation) and a proof of concept using Google Glass app and cross-platform mobile phone apps built with Xamarin. I also wrote and delivered a presentation on signal processing algorithm research at an internal Medtronic conference as one of 20 selected from a pool of ~500 submitted presentations. CSC was a leading consulting firm (rebranded as DXC Technology after merger with HP Enterprise in 2017). I was assigned to the Huntsville Operations Support Center (HOSC) at the Marshall Space Flight Center responsible for development and maintenance of multi-tier software to support ground control operations for the International Space Station (ISS), including data storage infrastructure from ISS and NASA experiments and software used by control room operators to monitor ISS payloads.Accomplishments included:Developed a prototype of a WPF application that enables NASA payload operators to create customizable graphical displays for real-time visualization of scientific payload data. Rewrote a legacy file-retrieving Windows application suffering from performance and usability issues using C# Windows Forms and C++ for client with server side in C. The application enabled payload operators to download, upload, and edit content on Linux servers from PCs on other NASA networks. Created a Linux UI to display the status of the HOSC’s new data archiving system. Refactored existing codebase for Linux status display GUIs with ~33% less lines of code.

I spent a summer at Vanderbilt performing biomedical engineering research on the effects of increased flow rates through microfluidic devices under the guidance of a professor. My results were presented at the 2010 annual Biomedical Engineering Society conference in a poster.
