J. Michael Mcelreath is a Experiential Learning Director at Cary Academy at Cary Academy. He possess expertise in curriculum development. Colleagues describe him as "Under the challenging circumstances of a unique management position, Dr. McElreath performed excellently as the coordinator and leader of a diverse group of independently-minded educators and high schoolers. His concern and empathy for his employees and students was always apparent, and he served fantastically as a liaison between the Governor's School, its privately-owned host, and the state DoE. I look forward to seeing Dr. McElreath's future educational successes." and "I say I 'hired' Mr. McElreath because I took both his world history and AP US history classes at East Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, NC, and essentially I asked him to do two things for me: teach me US and world history and sufficiently prepare me for the AP US history exam. He excelled at both, but more than that he was a friend and a mentor to me.
History was far from my favorite subject in high school, but Mr. McElreath's creative and interactive lesson plans made his class one of my favorites--I recall a lot of dramatic interpretations of historical events, mock trials and organized debates. His passion for his subject was evident in his enthusiasm for every class, and he conveyed his passion for teaching through a willingness to work outside of class with any student who needed extra help. I remember, too, that his classes were very challenging--Mr. McElreath expected a lot of his students, and at the same time he instilled in us the confidence to meet his expectations.
I say Mr. McElreath's teaching yielded great results because I learned more about history in my two classes with him than I ever thought I would. Outside of class, I learned about standing up for what one believes in (he fought to raise awareness of and bridge the achievement gap between Caucasian and minority students in the district) and that my success was important to an adult outside of my family--two very different but immeasurably important things to know as a high school student. Mr. McElreath is no doubt still the great teacher and role model he was when he taught history at East Chapel Hill High School, and it is both my great honor and a pleasure to recommend him."
