Philosophy of Education and LeadershipMy many years in coaching have greatly influenced my philosophy of leadership. I believe there are correlations from athletics to education, teaching and motivating people. A good leader needs to work harder than anyone they lead, they need to be the most prepared and use the resources around them, and finally they need to make those they lead jobs as easy as possible to complete. Good leaders should set the example to those they lead, working hard and being prepared sets that example. With that comes respect and trust, two important characteristics needed in leadership. Working hard and being prepared also creates knowledge and understanding of issues, programs, challenges and concerns. When it comes time to make difficult decisions, you and those you lead have confidence that you will make the best decisions. Good leaders know how to use the resources they have, and in education that is other people. Delegating assignments and responsibilities to others is a trait of good leaders. Good leader finds what strengths individuals have and gives them projects that fall under their expertise. I understand that others have strengths I don't and in order to build a successful school we need to take advantage of those strengths.Leaders should do all they can to make those they lead jobs as easy as possible. When a teacher is hired to teach math I want to do all I can to help him/her do that job. If that includes better technology, resources, or even a preferred class schedule, then we do it. Teachers do their best work when they teach in their subject area, and when they like coming to work. Good leaders create a positive work culture by supporting and helping their staff do their jobs.Being involved in education is a rewarding and enjoyable career. When educators and leaders work hard and are prepared, success happens and student learn. There will be a positive learning culture that benefits students.
