About Jacinta Wheatley

As an aspiring animal welfare worker and animal trainer some of my core values are based around animal ethics. I have a strong focus on animal health and welfare in both the agricultural and pet industries. The obvious language barrier between humans and animals creates a lot of confusion and frustration in their co-existence. This has lead to many of the most important animal welfare issues in Australia. I believe that by improving our understanding and sharing our knowledge on animals we can improve overall animal welfare. I value a more empathetic approach when working with animals aiming to create a more comfortable and understanding relationship between animal and handler. Using an animal's natural instincts and training within the animals phycological ability will enable the animal to understand the handler better. Correctly interpreting the animals body language will assist the handler in understanding the animal's response. I believe bridging this communication barrier will optimise our animal training and create a more pleasant and ethical experience for both parties.key experiences and achievementsI have been volunteering with guide dogs WA as a puppy raiser for the past 2 years with my family and have successfully raised 2 puppies in that time. Along this journey were supported and guided by professional trainers with a well-established training technique using positive reinforcement. This experience enhanced my resilience and problem-solving skills.I have been working in the equine industry as a riding instructor for 3 years under self-employment. Over time I focused on strengthening the relationship between horse and rider through effective communication. Providing my students with these essential tools gave them confidence and control when riding their horses. This role required me to adapt my methods to suit the individual rider and their horse which taught me to be more flexible. As a self-employed riding instructor, I developed skills in planning and organisational, problem solving and communication.
