Jack Abernethy Email and Phone Number
I completed my PhD, entitled 'Scottish Military Involvement in the Dutch Revolt, c.1570-1609,' in October 2024 at the University of St Andrews. My project focused on the role of Scottish soldiers and the Scottish crown in the Dutch Revolt and the various military, diplomatic, and social cross-currents which formed as a result of this involvement. To date, I have over fifteen publications, including three peer-reviewed journal articles, eight book reviews, and I have experience as a peer-reviewer for academic journals. These publications reflect the wide range of my scholarly interests, touching on various aspects of early modern Scotland, early modern warfare on land and at sea, piracy and privateering, and the history of migration. I have extensive public-speaking experience and have presented on past and ongoing research projects at various conferences, seminars, lecture series, and on digital media. In 2021, I was featured on Billy Kay's radio programme 'Scotland and the Low Countries,' broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland. In addition to my PhD research, I served as a bibliographic editor on the Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) between 2021 and 2022 through St Andrews' LASH-BASH project management. I have also been an administrator and editor on the University of St Andrews' 'Scotland, Scandinavia and Northern Europe Database' (SSNE) since 2018, where I have created or updated over 500 biographies. In addition to managing the SSNE's Low Countries entries, I created and manage the SSNE's Twitter account, @SSNEDatabase. I have worked as a freelance research assistant and have experience in transcribing, scanning, and photographing archival material only available onsite. I have taught at both the undergraduate and masters level on modules pertaining to modern British history, economic and social history, as well as practicing history in the digital age. I am currently a research assistant on the 'European Fiscal-Military System, 1530-1870' project based at the University of Oxford and I am the current book reviews editor for 'The Mariner's Mirror,' the international quarterly journal of the Society for Nautical Research. Enquiries from publishers and potential reviewers can be sent to the email in my contact information.
