Since June 2021 I’ve been responsible for broadcasting pre-recorded news segments on KUT 90.5 FM (KUT-HD1) in sync with the station’s programming schedule and voicing live updates between those segments, such as local traffic, weather, and station IDs. Between monitoring volume levels, squeezing underwriting spots into brief, pre-scheduled music beds, dropping in live news broadcasts from NPR Washington and BBC London, and keeping it all to an air-tight programming schedule, there’s little room for error. Other duties include recording and producing one-minute station ID audio spots, collecting technical data from our broadcast tower’s meter, and switching our radio output to satellite automation at end of shift.When KUT 90.5’s Senior Producer took time off for maternity leave in early 2019, she personally selected me to cover her production duties on top of my pre-existing responsibilities. From January to May of 2019 I regularly produced and distributed the following KUT Media podcasts: Two Guys on Your Head, Liner Notes, This Is Just To Say, The Secret Ingredient, and Views & Brews. For the nationally-renowned Two Guys on Your Head and Liner Notes, I coordinated recording sessions with the hosts, successfully pitched several ideas for episode topics, and helped direct conversations with an end product in mind when necessary. Two Guys on Your Head in particular required a lot of decision-making, as raw audio lasting up to 40 minutes needed to be condensed down to six and a half minutes of complete and coherent content before it could be cleared for broadcast.Since 2018 I’ve composed a variety of original music for KUT Media, including the themes for KUT’s This Is Just To Say and KUTX’s Song of the Day, the music beds for KUT’s multimedia project Love Letters To An Empty Austin and KUTX’s 2020 Virtual Sing-Along, and the original score for Pause/Play, which recently won in the Large Market Radio - Podcast category at the 2021 Regional Murrow Awards.

Since July 2018 I have been the sole producer for KUTX 98.9 FM (KUT-HD2)’s sponsored asset, Song of the Day, which exists both in on-air and web-based iterations. For the on-air element, I record a quick, conversational blurb about the featured track, then mix those voiced components alongside the aforementioned song into a single audio file and normalize the processed audio to radio broadcast standards. In order for Song of the Day to air at its regular time (12:55PM CT), the filename and format must meet the conventions of our station server and be uploaded no later than 11:59AM CT the day of. Securing the rights to a free song download each weekday requires me to maintain rapport with an ever-growing cast of record label promoters, A&Rs, managers, local musicians, friends-of-friends, and anyone in between that can help me schedule (and often premiere) new relevant music. It also means keeping an ear on KUTX’s playlists and promotions, so that none of my picks overlap rotation tracks or sound too far off from the station’s evolving musical character. After the web post goes live, I share it from our official KUTX Twitter account. According to the KUTX Digital Content Manager, Song of the Day consistently receives significantly more traffic on our homepage than any other of our web features.From 2017 to 2021 I provided written web content for NPR Music’s Station Breaks and Heavy Rotation, corresponding remotely & adhering to strict deadlines.From 2018 to 2020 I produced the long-standing free-form radio program Eklektikos, hosted by John Aielli. I assisted with fast-paced technical documentation, booking and facilitating guest interviews and musical performances & archival of previous sessions.From 2015 to 2018 I was a regular music host, responsible for music programming, board operating, interviewing, and channeling the voice of KUTX 98.9 for thirteen on-air hours a week. I resigned from this position to focus on production in 2018.

Although my contributions to Therapist Uncensored have been almost entirely remote since I came on for Episode 33, I feel like my connections to this podcast and its hosts grow closer each year. As the sole handler of post-production audio editing, I meticulously sync two or more tracks at a time, then carefully edit out undesirable moments such as background noise, long pauses, “um”s and “uh”s, stutters and false starts, etc. that might make the audio sound less polished. The final podcast episode is mixed down to meet streaming player regulations, adjusted to a standard volume, and then delivered to the hosts. Though the intro theme was already composed, I re- recorded and remixed it for more recent seasons and provided an original outro theme. I have also provided the hosts with technical direction on best recording practices and interview techniques to capture the highest quality content possible. Therapist Uncensored currently totals over one million downloads across 172 countries and new episodes typically generate around 15,000 downloads within the first two weeks of release.

I’ve overseen the Podcast Workshop during the most recent iterations of Mother Falcon Music Lab, an Austin-based non-profit that annually leads two week-long summer camps for aspiring musicians ages seven to seventeen. I designed a curriculum based around developing and producing a one-off podcast episode of the campers’ choosing, assisted in deciding roles based on their interests and strengths, and helped them navigate the challenge of finishing in just five one-hour workshops. Although I did provide the final edits, I followed the campers’ written radio play and used their choice of audio clips.In previous years at MFML I’ve been a guest speaker on the subjects of radio in general and sampling in music, held a two-week one-on-one mentorship based around “radio strategy” and creating an optimized electronic press kit, and co-created the curriculum for a graphic design course.
