Jack started his career on bridge and highway desgin and construction on major projects, including M6, A55 and A550, becoming a Chartered Civil Engineer in 1994. A government freeze on road building forced a career rethink and Jack still pinches himself that he was awarded a grant to retrain in geotechnical engineering at Imperial College. Recession proofing his career in the mid 1990s dictated branching into general infrastructure design. He gradually worked his way into pavement engineering following a eureka moment during Steve Brown's Rankine Lecture in 1996.This diverse career path has provided a range of cross-discipline skills in areas attendant to pavement projects such as drainage, highway structures design and ground engineering. He also still compiles and runs design projects and construction contracts, including supervision and project accounts. He has spent virtually all his career in companies with extensive field and laboratory capabilities and as such is highly experienced in pavement and ground investigations, including FWD and GPR. Jack's experience covers specialist design including soil stabilisation, HBM design and construction, problem soils, architectural paving, materials recycling and concrete slab rehabilitation. Rather than just turning the handle on DMRB/MCHW type jobs, most projects are non-standard or reference overseas standards, including AASHTO and some of the nuances of EN 12697. Overseas projects include ports and highways in the Caribbean, Canada, Italy, Middle East and Africa. Experience also extends to troubleshooting and Expert Witness, including preparing court documents.Interest in concrete technology was heightened after seeing another consultant expecting to site-batch C50 PQC for a remote site in Africa using locally available materials with no evaluation or mix design. This has developed into deeper concrete technology expertise and particular interest in bringing the latest concrete pavement research from overseas, especially the US, into UK practice. The need for carbon reduction is recognised but strongly of the view that opportunities are being lost from reliance on carbon calculators instead of getting under the bonnet of concrete mix design and proportioning.An interest in statistics through a part time degree enables him to make the best use of lab and field results. He feels strongly that good writing is essential and his technical reports are almost certainly better than yours.
