I am going into the 3rd year of my PhD in UCD where my research focuses on multimodal machine learning and how information is utilised by multimodal models. My research primarily relates to investigating the impact of imbalanced information, missing modality information and modality disagreement on the performance of multimodal models. Beyond the theoretical side, the application domain lies in Smart Cities and Intelligent Transport Systems(ITS'). These systems comprise of a large amount of mobile devices that produce heterogeneous data at different frequencies and resolutions. My research will investigate how knowledge gained from the theory of multimodal learning (learning from heterogeneous data types) can be used to address the challenges of deploying these real-time distributed IoT systems. As a result of working with audio and visual data as part of my research I developed a keen interest in working with audio data. I have since developed an audio quality pipeline processing tool for creating reproducible data processing pipelines for Audio researchers and a WAV file reader/writer written in Rust. The reader/writing is still under development, but it is one of two primary WAV file libraries in the Rust programming language and offers a lightweight package that is both easy to use and incredibly fast.I am very active in the School of Computer Science in UCD. I have been a demonstrator since 2018 and a teaching assistant since 2021. I am responsible for the running the practical side of a handful of modules each year. I often help the school with various promotional work such as when I interviewed Internet Hall of Fame recipient Dr Dennis Jennings.
