Jack is a current PhD student in Materials Science at the University of Washington (UW) studying dental enamel in Professor Dwayne Arola's lab. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Graduate Research Program fellowship, a collaborative effort between the UW and Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL). His research involves the mechanical, compositional, and micro- and nano-structural characterization of dental enamel from a wide range of animals, including several mammalian species as well as crocodilians. Techniques used in this effort include nanoindentation, indentation fracture resistance, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, synchrotron micro- and nano-computed tomography, and atom probe tomography. In addition to various non-human mammals and crocodilians, he is extending these same characterization techniques to human enamel afflicted by the genetic disease amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). Striving for a better understanding of AI offers insight both into how to provide better therapies for patients and how teeth are formed generally. Other research projects Jack is involved with include atom probe tomography of Pt nanoparticles and nano-gels for catalysis and characterization of Ti powders used in and parts produced by additive manufacturing.
