About Jack Hare
I am the Gale (1929) Career Development Assistant Professor in the Nuclear Science and Engineering Department at MIT, leading the magnetized high-energy-density plasma physics group centered on the new PUFFIN pulsed-power generator, puffin.mit.edu . We will use PUFFIN to study fundamental processes, such as magnetic reconnection and magnetized turbulence, which underpin both extreme astrophysical phenomena and advanced magneto-inertial fusion reactor concepts.For my PhD, I worked with the MAGPIE pulsed power generator, a house-sized laboratory experiment capable of producing an electrical current of one million Amperes, which is used to recreate the extreme conditions found in astrophysical plasmas. As a post-doc I worked at the Max-Planck -Institute for Plasma Physics, where I designed, prototyped and tested diagnostics for ITER, the world's most complex mechanical device.
