Hi, my name is Jack Hatcher and I was born in Fort Worth Texas and I am currently enrolled at UNT Denton.I have worked as an intern at the University of North Texas Health Science Center under Dr. Lauren Gonzales. During this internship I learned many new programs and completed over 47 different uploads and scans of Bovid teeth for use by paleoanthropologist. While working as an intern at HSC I interacted with many other researchers, many of whom were working in different departments, and had a cordial relationship with them. I also was able to familiarize myself with much of HSC's layout and amenities.During my first year of school at UNT I participated and still do participate in the SEA-phages program. During the first portion of this program I learned how to work in a BSL2 research environment and learned how to safely use bunsen burners and sterile tools. For this program I collected a soil sample and isolated and extracted a bacteriophage using Streptomyces baarnensis. Throughout this class I spread many agar plates with bacteria and used lab tools to introduce my phage to the bacteria monitoring its growth. By the end of the first semester I successfully extracted the DNA of my bacteriophage and sent it to Pittsburgh to be sequenced. For the second semester we worked on my bacteriophages DNA, which had been chosen due to its high quality DNA and its very infective properties it had shown during Host Range. For this we had to learn six new programs for reading and interpreting the DNA sequence. Some of these included PECAAN, Phamerator, HHpred, NCBI, and Deep TMHMM. We then had to annotate sections of the DNA by hand and determine the functions of these genes.I worked at Brix Barbecue for three years and as one of the two head Pit Masters for the majority of those three years. During this time I learned how to manage a smoker and the fire within it and would often times work from 4pm to midnight or even 2am. I worked in difficult environments at this time as the food truck had no AC or heater so the hot Texas summers and cold Texas winters were especially difficult. During late 2023 early 2024 we transitioned into a brick and mortar restaurant and I took on a leadership role and taught a new employee how to take over my duties since I would have to move to college. During this time I was undoubtedly one of the youngest Pit Masters in Fort Worth if not Texas as I was 17 when I began. This job taught me important leadership roles, managing of resources, customer service, and how to work hard even in a hard environment.
