This involves assessing the significance of differing heritage assets wherever change in the historic environment is being proposed, underpinned by a thorough understanding of heritage assets and a detailed knowledge of the heritage and planning legislation, policy and guidance. The assets typically assessed include listed buildings, conservation areas, registered parks and gardens, world heritage sites, scheduled monuments and non-designated heritage assets. Undertaking a diverse portfolio of tasks, advising on the heritage estate of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) as part of its road map to a more sustainable future. My role represents the historic building expertise within the MOD which involves ensuring the delivery of Government and MOD historic estate policy through the effective implementation of advice and strategy. The role provides an important interface between the Defence Infrastructure Organisation and the military stakeholders, advising on a diverse range of proposals. The work broadly includes:• Technical heritage advice on proposals.• Advising on existing and emerging national policy and guidance • Liaison with key stakeholders• Effective management of the estate. • Responding to Parliamentary Questions and Ministerial BriefsThe estate includes MOD Barracks, Airfields, Naval Bases and a vast training estate that extends from the deep marine environment, through dune systems and across the UK to the mountainous forests and moorlands of Scotland and Northern Ireland. My particular focus is on built heritage assets within the North of England, Midlands and Scotland.

Whilst this role was based in the North West, the majority of projects I was involved in were situated within London and the South West. Actively involved within the Conservation Department team at the Council, gaining valuable experience in casework on listed and locally listed buildings. Conservation Area Character Appraisals and Management Plans were also undertaken on behalf of the council.

Undertaking a systematic review of the condition of all the council's 3,000 listed buildings to help produce a more effective Buildings at Risk Register.

The placement was wide-ranging and involved the conservation of the historic fabric of the building and its contents, assisting in managing the house’s visitor experience and house maintenance.
